Where Did My Soul Come From?

When I was a little girl, I often wondered where I came from.  My brain knew I came from my parents, but something deep inside of me that I couldn’t explain said there is so much more to being in existence than the process of procreation.  My heart knew, even as an innocent child, I am here because of a Creator I didn’t know yet.  How did I know that?  There was this feeling of being accountable to a moral code I couldn’t define or understand how it came to be within me.  My curiosity sent me on a search for the parts within me that sometimes felt united and other times separated.  Questions began to flood my heart.  What are those parts of me I don’t understand and how did they get inside of me?  Where do they come from?

As time went by, my questions were answered, but not in the way I imagined. I learned about the different parts of me that I couldn’t identify as a child.  My discovery led me to believe I am made up of distinct parts, but united in one body.  I determined I have a heart, a mind, a spirit, a soul, and a strength within this body of mine.  My natural curiosity begged to ask where they came from and which one came first.

I am persuaded and convicted of the knowledge I gained through a book of history, poetry, and letters written to people, who like me, had questions about their existence and where they came from.  This book contains all the answers I was looking for.  Within its pages, I discovered the why’s and how’s of what I could see, hear, taste, touch, and walk upon.  My sense of belonging to a higher understanding brought me great joy and hope, but I still didn’t understand the object of the joy or the hope rising to my consciousness. Reading this book caused me to ask more questions and as long as I kept reading, the answers continued to flow from the message within its pages.

I can remember swinging on a neighborhood swing set and gazing into the sky with each passing swoop, trying to comprehend how did all of this happen? As I reeled back and forth to gain as much height as possible, the sensation of the freedom to flow through the air with little regard to the dynamics of how that is even possible, brought an incredible sensation of sovereignty I knew did not belong to me.  The answers were found in the same amazing book.

Life as we know it begins at conception.  Within seven days, red blood cells are delivering oxygen to the tissue and the development of vascular channels.  After twenty days, the heart begins to pump fluid through blood vessels.  Even before THIS, God says He knew me.  The first ten words in the book of Jeremiah, Gods Word says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you… HOW?  Could it be because the prophet Ezekiel says in chapter 18, verse 4, “ Behold ALL souls are Mine;…God is The Keeper of souls!! Psalm 139:13-16, Ecclesiastes 11:5, Isaiah 43:10, 44:2, 24, and Leviticus 17:11-14 all  of these passages from the Bible, speak of the Owner and Maker of our souls.  The passage in Leviticus states the life of the flesh is in the blood.  The Old Testament was written in the Hebrew language.  In most instances like this one, when “life” is used in a passage, the meaning is soul. God decided when to send our souls to a womb to be born of a man and woman.

In the Gospel of Matthew, it is recorded that God invites us to find His rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” In Jeremiah 6:16, the Lord says, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls.” In each instance of God’s rest for our souls, there is an act of finding we must be engaged in. You will not stumble into or trip over His rest. You must be seeking it.

Knowing our Almighty and Powerful God carefully formed me into a working, breathing, thinking, moving, speaking, hearing, touching, and seeing human being, that has a special soul assigned to them, from HIS creation.  We truly are uniquely formed and woven by God.  That is astounding, awesome, and amazing!!  Only an intelligent Creator could conceive my form before there was even one day to my life.

Our souls are so precious to our Father, He records all the different ways He preserves them, protects them, and provides promises for our souls throughout His Word.  Isaiah 38:17 states God is the one who keeps our souls from the pit of nothingness.  1 Peter 2:25 tells us when we choose to stay in the Shepherd’s flock, we are in the Guardians protection. 1 Peter 1:9 explains when we live for Christ wholly and completely, we will, not might, will obtain the outcome of our faith the salvation of our souls.

Now that I am older, I can explain, explore, and praise the excitement of knowing Who is responsible for all that is within me.  Now God wants me to know Him through His Son Jesus the Christ.  God wants me to love Him with the very soul, heart, mind, and strength He gave me.  One day, God is going to require my soul from me.  It is my responsibility to find His rest, curl up in His lap, and lay my head against His loving heart.

Woman of the Bible

Within Her Grasp Part Two

Let’s look a little closer at the woman in Genesis chapter 19 we know as Lot’s wife.

We know, after barely escaping a violent death at the hands of her own people of Sodom, God offered her a new life for her, Lot, and their daughters. God offered her protection, mercy, and a perfect path to salvation. She chose to look back. In the original Hebrew language, “looked” has the meaning; scan, look intently at; by implication to regard with pleasure, favor or care. This is a heart issue.

Looking back is dangerous for many reasons.

To look back is to yearn for what is behind you. When we look back, it can only lead to old conflicts, bitterness, it can hinder forward progress, it can bring defeat, and it also denies the power of forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

Paul tells us in Philippians 3:13-14 forget what is behind and reach forward to what is ahead in order to press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Mrs. Lot was given an incredible goal to reach upwards and she chose to look back instead. Sometimes we are faced with, what seems as intense and detrimental, being encouraged to leave our comfort zones that keep us in the same friend circles, the same ministries, and the same attitudes that hinder our growth. If our lives/salvation is in the balance, what will our choice be?

To look back is to dread what is before you. Why can we be so afraid of our future? Some of us live as though we have invisible tethers tying us down to unhealthy attitudes, hopeless tomorrows, and sinful pasts. We are and have been FREED through Christ Jesus to pursue the future. Why would we choose to hold on to the chains that Jesus died to remove?

Did Mrs. Lot toy with the idea that something within herself or those they were fleeing from, had a better resolution to her present dilemma?  Could she actually believe there has to be another path to salvation?  God’s Word tells us in Matthew 7 there is only one path that leads to life eternal. She was presented with the narrow way and traded it for the wide!

Due to her failure to listen to God’s messengers, Mrs. Lot became a “pillar of salt”. In that phrase; we have a symbol of character, as well as a monument of destiny. A pillar of salt is the picture of many society women today. All the potential and make up of a true woman’s heart that has become rubbish by the life they lead. Instead of a woman, you have only a pillar of salt.

We have the privilege, honor, and confidence to know our God, our Sovereign Lord, has put within our grasp Godly homes, our escape, an exciting future, and as the Hebrew writer says in verse 1 of chapter 4, He wants nothing more than to share His rest with us. Lot’s wife was convicted through her heart. It was her heart that condemned her. She looked with longing at the things that are evil to God. There is not enough room in our hearts for evil and God. How shall we escape, if we neglect to grasp so great a salvation?

Within her grasp awaited a Godly home, the opportunity to heed the warnings of God, the ability to recognize and be thankful for the mercy shown to her, and her salvation, but just like those Paul talks about in the first few chapters of Romans, she traded the truth for a lie.

Learning to grasp the message of God is like observing toddlers at an Easter egg hunt. Especially those who are very close to mastering their walk without tipping over. They are intent about discovering the plastic eggs that hold unknown treasures inside. Their Moms and Dads are there to guide them from prize to prize. Sometimes the excited parents point to where the prizes are hidden. A few of the toddlers attempt to bend down to reach for the treasure, then hesitate because it tips them off balance, but with loving encouragement and guidance they were able to reach a little further in order to grasp the prize. Children are so determined to reach past difficult situations to achieve a goal.  They don’t have the mentality of not being able to attain the prize.  Everything inside of them says they can!  We need to be childlike in our reaching beyond what is in front of us to receive the eternal gift.

God does the same thing with us as did the parents of the toddlers. He has laid the prize before us! It’s not hidden.  He will always point His children in the way of salvation with loving encouragement and guidance.  And along with His Angels, He rejoices when we take hold of the prize and count it as our greatest hope and treasure.

Let’s get excited about what is within our grasp and share that excitement with others. God permits each life created in the womb a soul and He wants them back with Him some day. Please don’t let another opportunity to shout out the way of escape to the lost that brings eternal life. If you ever have to run for your life, make sure you are headed in the direction Jesus has provided for you.

Woman of the Bible

Within Her Grasp Part One

Some of my most frustrating and regrettable moments are lost opportunities. I can be presented with a moment, a gift, or a treasure and for some unknown reason, I forfeit them.  What was I thinking? What was I afraid of? Could I not see what was right in front of me? Could I not recognize the most precious jewel God treasures?  Was I listening to God?

In chapter 19 of Genesis verses 1-26, Moses writes about a nameless woman. Jewish historians record her name as Adith or Irith.  According to the Targums of Jonathan and Jerusalem, she was a native of Sodom. She is Lot’s wife.

Let’s go to Lot’s house. Lot comes home with guests and announces his arrival to the household. After greeting their guests, Mrs. Lot, with the help of her daughters, finish preparing dinner. They are in the middle of feasting and some very loud, rude men have surrounded their home, shouting at the top of their lungs, demanding their guests to be turned over to them. The tension inside their home is building to the point that someone has to go outside and deal with this angry crowd. Can you visualize Mrs. Lot stricken with fear, running around slamming all the windows, closing all doors, securing all the locks, grabbing her daughters and huddling in the safest corner of the house, pleading for her husband to stay inside with them, afraid of what might happen to him if he goes outside, and feeling helpless in a violent situation? Her pleadings go unheeded as she watches her husband go outside and try to rationally deal with these evil men. I can imagine Mrs. Lot, her daughters, and her guests can hear every word that is spoken outside those walls. The noise level must be deafening to their ears and yet she hears her husband’s attempts to quiet the crowd only to enrage them further. The conversation then turns to the unthinkable, the horrible, the sacrificial offering of her two virgin daughters in place of the visitors. Can you feel the grasp she must have on her children?  I can feel the Momma Bear in Mrs. Lot thinking “Over my dead body.” The noise of the voices, the pounding on the doors and walls are bringing her to the limits of her consciousness. Then it happens, the angels reveal themselves, snatch her husband to safety and blind the crowd of offenders! All is quiet. At this point, Lot, his wife, and daughters are probably thinking they narrowly escaped a violent death.  Glances are shared between Lot’s family and the angels. The angels are waiting for the family to gain their composure in order to deliver the first warning and command from God. Leave or die!

This vile disruption in her home has to be mind numbing. I am sure sleep did not come easy to Lot’s family, especially Mrs. Lot. She has had all night and into the morning to think about this warning. Morning came, it was time to leave, and they all hesitated. Time truly was of the essence so; the Angels grasped all of them by the hand and escorted them out of town with the command “Escape for your life”. Can you hear the angels nonchalantly say, “Oh, by the way, escape for your life?  NO!!!! They probably used a slightly elevated tone of voice with much inflection!! Escape for your life! RUN for your life! What was there to think about? Considering the ordeal Lot and his family had just experienced the night before, how much urging did they need? I believe Mrs. Lot probably had the blinders lifted for the first time to reveal the vileness of her people. I am sure Mrs. Lot found it difficult to comprehend that her own people would bring her family any harm. BUT, how often does one receive the warning “Escape for your life”? WHY do we hesitate when God speaks to us?  Can we not hear Him when He speaks so clearly?

1 Corinthians 10:13 Paul tells us God always provides a way of escape.

After they are told to escape, the Angels follow it up with:  “Don’t look back!” This was not a suggestion!! It was a direct instruction from God! If we were honest with ourselves, in this moment, could we keep from looking back?  These are her people, her nation, and her home she is leaving behind. BUT God spoke directly to her, and her family, through His Angels!!  God speaks to us through His prophets and Apostles just as directly as Lot’s wife received her message. God, through His word, provides a clearly marked path to safety at His side. Jesus says to follow Him. His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto His path.

Mrs. Lot had a God-made escape route. All she had to do was press forward and grasp the freedom given to her by a gracious and loving Father, but she couldn’t see the escape path through the tangled, deceiving, mess in her heart. Then… SHE LOOKED BACK!

Listening For His Voice

Early in my Christian commitment, while attending a Wednesday night Bible study, I had the privilege of singing praises to my Father before the nights lesson began.  One of the songs we sang that night, I had only heard a couple of times, but it burned at my very soul like never before.  Instead of fumbling along thru the song, trying to learn the lyrics, I kept silent so I could listen to the words.  The first complete phrase I heard clearly was, “Is He calling me?”  The words almost sent me to my chair to bury my face in shame and cry out to God for forgiveness.  Praise God the next words in the song were an answer to my plea.  “I will rise up, rise up, and THEN I will bow down, and lay my crown at His wounded feet.”  These words quickly transported me to the cross where I stood among those who were crucifying Jesus.  My hands felt as though they were layered over the hands of the Roman centurions as they nailed Him to the cross. God’s Word reveals Jesus died for ALL past, present, and future sins.  I am convicted under future sins, but I am also covered, cleansed, and redeemed by Jesus’ blood.  I can only imagine that with every sin I fall prey to, Jesus is reminded of the pain at the cross, but He still invites me back, with open arms and forgiveness.

Again, I ask myself, is He calling me?  This question brings the stirring deep within me to the surface and demands an answer.  How many times have you asked yourself, “Why am I here at this place, why did I leave my former life, and why me?”

2 Timothy 1:8-14 Paul writes we are called and it is a holy calling.  Not because of what we’ve done, but because of what we are going to do for His Kingdom and what He has done for us.  Paul writes in verse 13 to keep pure, and keep sound the words which you have heard.  Who’s Words?  God’s Words!!!

Dear friends we need to hold dear, mightily guard, intensely protect, and robustly defend the messages we learn from HIS WORD, not man’s word.  THEN take this knowledge to the lost, because we were called for such a task.  Don’t stop studying, praying for knowledge, and asking for wisdom regarding His Word, until you have a clear concise method of relating salvation to the rest of the world.  Really, all you need is your story.  We are called, called according to His purpose, His plan, His glory, and our good.  Consider rising to the calling.  Have you lost touch with the magnificent power of God’s Word?  Search your soul, bring to the surface the joy set before you, and rediscover the treasure of His love waiting for you in His story. Is there a stirring deep within you?

There’s a stirring deep within me

Could it be my time has come?

Where I’ll see my gracious Savior face to face when all is done

Is that His voice I am hearing?”

Come away, my precious one”

Is He calling me? Is He calling me?

I will rise up, rise up

Then I’ll bow down

And lay my crown

At His wounded feet

Where Does Your Heart Sing?

After reading Psalm 137 a few thoughts were laid on my heart.
The psalmist speaks of an emptiness and a void due to separation, isolation, and being captive to those who carried them away.

They were asked by the foreigners to sing one of their songs of home.  I love their reply. “How can we when we are in a foreign land?”
This sparked within me the fact that our sin should develop or cause  a sense of separation from God. A small nagging fear that creates the necessity to repent and seek God in prayer asking for forgiveness and restoration.  Sinning should seem foreign to us instead of familiar. It should be distasteful and burdensome. We should not feel at home.
Then the captive go on to describe how this separation is working in their hearts…how it has brought to the forefront of their minds the love they have for the home they lost. With urgency and determination they vow to never forget their homes.  If they did forget, the music would no longer be available to them to play or sing.
We should always keep at the forefront of our hearts and minds that we have a home from which we never want to be in jeopardy of losing. A home we can reach, only through and because of, The One Who counts us as righteous,  cleansed, and redeemed.
We would do well to apply the fear of physical atrocities and spiritual devastations should we ever forget the home we possess.  We need to visualize a clear picture of this promised home we want to dwell in.

I have no desire to live in a foreign land with foreign people and a foreign god.

You can’t sing there.

Be A Door Opener!!

For some reason, the purpose of “doors” has taken on a broader meaning and spectrum lately. We all know doors are important.  Our homes, cars, offices, and even our tents or campers have doors.  Some have labels like Enter, Exit, Women, Men, and Private.  We use them everyday to enter familiar and unfamiliar places.  We also use them to keep people out, hide behind, ensure safety, and close chapters of our lives.

For those who have battled their way past the sins that separated them from Christ, find immense relief when closing a door that holds agonizing pain, strife, and consequences that are exhausting to live with. This one staggering triumph is exhilarating, humbling, and a freedom that is unexplainable.  That’s what Jesus does for those who are willing and brave enough to shut a few doors!!!! His forgiveness is a path that leads you away from shut doors. His mercy and grace give light to a darkened doorway.  His blood washes ALL the shame, guilt, and iniquities that live behind the shut doors.

It can be a long hard fight to close doors that are harmful, dangerous, and full of pain.  These doors are harmful to the new life they have chosen with Christ Jesus, dangerous to their faith building, and reminders of the pain that Satan is and will continue to use to win them back.  People, who have closed doors, did it for a reason.  The behaviors, memories, and temptations behind the closed doors pose a threat to their new life in Jesus.

Here is my plea.  You may be aware of the past behind those doors, but that doesn’t give you the right or the authority to unlock what Jesus has locked up.  His blood covered all their sins the same way it covered and still covers yours today.  Jesus can and will transform the unlikeliest of all people, because He has the POWER and AUTHORITY to do so.  Peter was given the keys to the kingdom to lock up the old and unlock the new, no other. Matthew 16:19.  We too, need to lock up the old man and to put on the new every day.

Let’s all be door openers!!  Luke 12:36, Gods Word says, “Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks.”  Give others doors to knock on. Announce doors of opportunity and salvation, and invite others in!!  John 10:1-3 Be the doorkeeper who is able to open the door with love for the sheep.  Colossians 4:3 Be intentional for an open door to share the amazing news of Jesus Christ and His righteousness.  Acts 14:27 Be ready to report how God opened a door of faith to an unbeliever. A safe and welcoming open door is for some, a dream come true.

Psalm 18:28 “For YOU light my lamp: The LORD my GOD illumines my darkness.”

Muddy Memories

When my oldest daughter was about 6 years old, she wanted to play soccer. When we arrived to her first game, the soccer fields they were soaked and had a prominent amount of mud all over them.  The referee determined the field was playable.  While waiting for the decision, the team was playing in the wonderful mud. Out came the wet wipes and the moms started clean up duty with all the team players including my precious daughter who had entirely covered her hands in mud.

After the game begins, it couldn’t have been 7 to 10 minutes and my daughter was knocked down into the mud!!  She stood up, looked at her mud covered hands, let out a wail, which turned into sobbing, ran off the field to the sideline in the middle of the play and was mortified because of the mud on her hands.  I was bewildered. Now, mud is a bad thing.  I cleaned her up and tried to send her back out, but she was not in favor of returning.  Being the mom I was, I wouldn’t let her quit.  She played the rest of the game, periodically looking over at me with the “unfair face” and avoided all the muddy areas on the field.

After speaking to a dear friend of mine recently, I was reminded that life can and will get muddy.  I’ve had some recent mud encounters.  I found myself wordless before God.  I asked Him to listen to my heart, because I was blinded by the mud.  I struggled to know if He could see me through the mud.  Did He still recognize me?  He did.  My Father picked me up, washed me off ever so gently, allowed me to run to the sideline and momentarily sit on the bench, and then lovingly reminded me of whom I am to Him and gently put me back in the game.  This led me back to Isaiah 43.

God’s people struggled with mud repeatedly.  In chapter 42 Isaiah reminds Israel they are in the mud.  They are living in it, breathing it, eating it, and blinded by it.  Then God washes them off and brings them back to His side in chapter 43.  Verse 1 “But now, thus says Jehovah Who created you, O Jacob, and who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, because I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!!”

If that is not enough, read the rest of the chapter, it is just as invigorating and inspiring. Jehovah won’t let us drown in the mud. He won’t let the flames or fire of the devil burn or even scorch us.  We are precious in His eyes and He loves us.  He will bring us back from any direction we have been dragged to.  He is our only Savior; there is no other besides the Almighty God.  He wipes away our mud for His own sake and chooses not to remember the dirty mess He cleaned up.  What an AWESOME God!!!

Like my daughter, most people have experienced being muddy and wear the “not fair face”.  No matter the reason for the mud experience, the remedy was and is the same.  It gets washed off.  God is our Precious Father Who is willing and waiting to clean off all our mud, redeeming us for His own.  You can’t get cleaner than that.

The Way to Rest

In Matthew, chapter 11, in verses 28-30 Jesus is speaking and He says, “Come to Me all who toil and are burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Yokes are designed to bring two together to act as one.  When a farmer places a yoke on his oxen in order to prepare his field for planting, he brings two individual beasts together to act as one mind.  The oxen do not naturally, or by nature, come to the master and asked to be yoked.  They are led to the yoke.

After researching the concept of the early yoke and oxen process, it was very interesting to note the farmer usually had at least one seasoned ox who would be the trainer for the younger ox.  The yokes were uniquely designed and created for the ox that was to be yoked.  No two oxen ever wore the same yoke.  The yoke had to be designed with a particular ox in mind or the coupling would never work and the yoke would cause huge sores on the ox wearing them.  When the young ox won’t allow themselves to be yoked, these same horrendous sores develop on the area where the yoke should fit.  The sores can grow to the size of a dinner plate.   The young ox would be half in and half out of the yoke, but never completely under allowing the seasoned ox to guide  them.  If the young ox goes on long enough without allowing the yoke to fit, then the ox is of no use to the farmer and sent off for slaughter.

We too are called to come along side of Jesus and be yoked with Him.  His yoke is perfect for us. We learn from Him when we humble ourselves to the yoke He willingly allows us to wear with Him.  This yoke of His is our strength and guidance. Jesus’ yoke teaches you to stay by His side.  His yoke teaches you to mimic His steps. Jesus’ yoke allows you to learn all about Him and be transformed into His image. His rest does not come outside the yoke. Only within His yoke can you find the rest He promises.

Even more interesting are the Greek words Jesus chose in Matthew to describe His yoke.  In the Greek, yoke is translated, the beam of the balance.  We are only balanced when we are completely yoked to Jesus, not half in or half out, but completely humble to His yoke.  The toil and burden Jesus speaks of is a feeling of fatigue.  The heavy laden Jesus stated is a spiritual anxiety.  When Jesus says He is meek it is a humbling of oneself to the yoke.  Jesus humbles Himself to the yoke He yearns to share with you. The lowly is a humiliation in the heart.  It takes a measure of humility to allow yourself to be vulnerable and obedient in the yoke. When Jesus uses the word rest, in this passage, it is an intermission.  We all need to pause in between the burdens we are called to bear while in the flesh. Jesus says this will happen in our souls.  In the Greek, this use of soul is our breath or our spirit. Jesus allows us to catch our breath, refresh and go forward. Finally, Jesus states His beam of balance is useful to us and easy for Him. The yoke is not for Jesus, but for us.

We all have experienced the sores on our back from resisting the yoke designed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Our yokes are uniquely designed for each one of us, so we can mimic Jesus, so we can walk His way, follow His guidance, and find HIs rest, strength, and joy as we serve Him His way.  Jesus said, “Take MY yoke…”  We need to remember who the yoke belongs to and submit all that we are, to His yoke, so we can know the rest He promises.

Nurturing A New Child

Watching the birth of a new child before your very eyes cannot be described in a few words.  A new birth brings great joy, relief, excitement, tears, peace, comfort, purity, wonder, awe, and so many more emotions that are unique to the individual experiencing the event. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends can all share in the exhilaration of the new birth. Thoughts of feeding, nurturing, guiding, counseling, encouraging, supporting, reminding, and even disciplining can run wildly through our thoughts in those moments of the birth.

This is the most important birth any of us can witness when one is born into Christ. Joy infiltrates us when someone we love makes the decision to name Jesus as their Lord and Master. Relief causes our shoulders to drop and our faith increase at the birth of a new child in God. Excitement ensues for their earthly and eternal futures, which brings comfort and peace to our souls. We see purity in the moment when they rise up out of the waters of baptism and are called holy in Christ’s eyes. We share wonder in the salvation plan where Jesus’ blood cleanses all of the sins of this new child. We are in awe of the sight of the new birth unfolding before our eyes, knowing Jesus provided the way to this moment.

Jesus taught this second birth was far more valuable and essential than the first. In John 3:3-8   Jesus answered and said to him (Nicodemus), “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”   Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.   Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.”

Nicodemus asks a very logical question.  How can one be born again?  Jesus states we are to be born of water and Spirit.  We know Jesus is speaking of baptism; the immersion into water for the forgiveness of sins.  Paul and Peter speak of this repeatedly throughout the New Testament.  Acts 2:38, 4:12, 16:31ff, Mark 16:16, Colossians 1:13-14, 2:13.  Paul also confirms baptism as a rebirth in Titus 2:11 through 3:5-7. In verses 3-5, Paul states “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.  But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,  whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life”.   The word “regeneration,” in the original language of Greek, means “spiritual rebirth”.

Every soul of the age of accountability on this earth must come to Jesus, be baptized into His possession, receive forgiveness of sins, and be given the gift of the Holy Spirit. You are not saved in the eyes of God, or His Son, until you have obeyed the words of Jesus.  Jesus said UNLESS one is born of the water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

When we witness this incredible birth, should not our hearts be just as awed, in wonder, excited, comforted, shed tears of joy, announce the birth, make plans for helping them grow, teach them what Jesus wants them to understand, provide the spiritual milk they need until they are ready for meat, look on them with the same purity as a newborn child, and love them with the love of the Father?  YES!!  These babes in Christ need just as much nurturing and guidance as any earthly newborn child.  MORE!!.  Some are trying to unlearn the familiar lives they’ve led and learn to live a new life in Christ. Newborn babies learn as they grow and have NOTHING to undo, but new born children of God sometimes have to overcome unpleasant realities while they are learning the new life they have chosen.  No one is born grown or mature. God recognizes that their sins have been washed away.  We as their parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends do not have the right or authority to hold their past sins against them.  God sent His Son to the cross as the ultimate sacrifice for you and for them.  There are no second class children in Christ.

I know many of you believed I was talking about the earthly birth of a child at the beginning of my thoughts to you, but I wasn’t.  I want us to get just as thrilled and excited when a soul from this broken world recognizes they need Jesus and are willing to give up themselves to be transformed by Christ and through Christ into His image.  When they bow their knee to Him and accept the fact they need His love, His mercy, His grace, and His forgiveness, we need to recognize it all the more.  We never stop needing Jesus. These newborns need to know this too.

Spiritual Blessing

Lost Arts and Skills

Whenever I hear the word “homemade”, I savor the memories of Grandma’s cooking!!  Freshly baked bread, scrumptious cookies, and assorted pies with flakey crust are the epitome of homemade to me. My memories are jam packed with quilts, canning, memory making, letters, visits, and snapping beans.  My Grandmother and Great-Grandmother were all about Homemade

Did you know that the majority of our public school systems no longer offer a Home Economics class?  I would never have learned the basic rules of sewing, table setting, or cooking without those classes!!  Our younger generation has been robbed of arts and skills that are no longer taught in the home or school.  We pushed out home cooked meals for making it to the matinee on time, for attending a new hobby class, for playing one more game, going to sports events, etc.  We buy and send our gifts online.  We pay to have our clothes mended, sew on a simple button, or altered.  When did we stop teaching the arts and skills of making our homes, homes?

I believe God understands the precious gift of homemade.  I believe that the lost art and skills of homemade can be revived.  Paul tells us, the women, in Titus 2:3-5 “Older women likewise in demeanor as befits those who engage in sacred things, not slanderers, nor enslaved by much wine, teacher of what is good, that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, of a sober mind, pure, workers at home, good, subject to their own husband, that the word of God would not be blasphemed.”

1 Peter 4:9 “Be hospitable to one another without grumbling” and the last words of verse 13 of Romans 12: “pursue hospitality’. The word “hospitable” in the original Greek language means “fond of guests” and “lover of hospitality”. This is another lost art in our Christian homes. How can we teach a command by Paul and Peter if we are not exampling hospitality? Those of us who know these scriptures, need to understand this is not a suggestion!  It is God’s Word and He did not inspire Paul and Peter to include this in His Word if it has no impact on our Christian lives as women today and future generations.

We, who have the ability to pass down our common knowledge skills to a generation of fast food, boxed food, throw away clothes, and shop online generations, should be imparting this lost knowledge to our young ladies and young moms who may never get the experience any other way.  I challenge you to hold cooking classes, sewing classes, loving your husband classes, quilting, crocheting, and knitting classes. This could open up a whole new ministry to the young single and married women within your congregation, but to the ones in your communities as well.  Many of our young people have no idea what a stamp looks like, how to address an envelope, write a letter, cut up a whole chicken, peel and slice potatoes, prepare a turkey for Thanksgiving, knead bread dough, decorating homes, being hospitable, setting aside time for daily Bible study, and so many things we take for granted; arts and skills we had the privilege of being taught!

Who is going to teach them? I am pleading with you to be that “older” woman Peter speaks of and reach out to the younger women. Offer your arts and skills with love and humility.  This growing chasm between the generations is NOT Gods design for the church.  Ladies, don’t let fear stop you from enhancing the life of a younger sister in Christ, or better yet, bring a new babe into the fold from your community. Look at all the topics Peter lists you can talk about while imparting your knowledge.

No matter where you are in your walk with God, if you are still here, and as long as it is called today, God has a purpose for you.  For a Christian, there are only recruitment centers.  Retirement is not an option!  Jesus also invites us to use our ordinary, every day, common knowledge, arts and skills to uplift, encourage, and teach what Homemade is all about.  How do you know, by sharing your skills, you may also impart a far better gift?…The teachings of God’s ways.

Titus 2:3-5
The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things — 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
